Research

The Luthuli Museum research department engages in pioneering projects aimed at producing knowledge on the life and legacy of Chief Albert Luthuli. These include exhibitions, publications, conference papers and an extensive oral history based project.

Most recently the Luthuli Museum has published In the shadow of Chief Albert Luthuli-Reflections of Goolam Suleman by Loganathan Naidoo. The manuscript focuses on shared moments and interactions between Stanger resident, Goolam Suleman, and Chief Albert Luthuli. As well as providing fascinating insights into historical events, the book offers glimpses into Luthuli’s daily life. It is a significant contribution to a widening body of scholarship on Luthuli.

Upcoming research projects focus on commemorating 50 years since Chief Albert Luthuli was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1960. In conjunction with the exhibition that includes previously unseen archival documents and images, the Luthuli Museum will produce a commemorative pocket size book. This book contains 50 quotes by Luthuli relating to matters such as being an African, Freedom, Leadership and Peace.

As part of a commitment to developing museum theory and practice, the Luthuli Museum has also published Engaging Creative Minds: The Luthuli Museum. Developing out of the Fourth Group for Children in African Museums workshop, hosted by the Luthuli Museum and Commonwealth Association of Museums in 2009, Engaging Creative Minds explores how museum educational programmes, community engagements and clubs make culture a real force in sustainable development practice.

An on-going and extensive oral history project includes interviews with community members and other people who met or were involved with Chief Luthuli during his life. These oral histories are being digitally recorded, transcribed and then archived as part of the Luthuli Museum collection. To date, several Luthuli family members, liberation fighters, local community members and associates of Luthuli have been interviewed.

The Luthuli Museum is continuously expanding its collection and welcomes queries from all researchers interested in Chief Albert Luthuli.
